Student BOE Members Attend Training at Herkimer BOCES
On September 17, the ex officio student school board members from Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES component districts gathered at the Herkimer BOCES Gateway Center for a training to learn more about what it’s like to serve on a Board of Education. The event was part of a statewide virtual training with various state-level officials, including New York State Education Commissioner Betty Rosa, speaking to students and answering questions.
Representing Frankfort-Schuyler were Thomas Eck and Thomas Service, the two students serving as ex officio members on the Frankfort-Schuyler Central School District Board of Education for the 2025-26 school year.
Beginning July 1, 2025, all public school districts across New York State with a high school are required to have at least one ex officio student member on their Board of Education. While ex officio members do not have a formal vote, they play an important role in bridging communication between the school board and the student body.
“I think they’re going to look to you more than you think they are,” Herkimer BOCES District Superintendent D.J. Shepardson told the student board members at the training.
The Frankfort-Schuyler CSD looks forward to working with its student board members and the unique insight that they will bring to the Board this school year and beyond.
