Dear Families,

First grade is awesome!!! It is a lot of work, but I also know the importance of having fun in the classroom! I have a lot of new and exciting ideas to share. Below you will find some information about my policies and procedures. Please review these with your child.

Teacher/Parent Communication Folder: Each student will be given a folder. They will be expected to use them every day. I allow my students time at the end of each day to place homework assignments and additonal pratice in the folder on the "Return to School" side.  All completed/graded classwork or notices from me or the office will be placed on the, "Keep at Home" side.  Please review your child’s folder nightly to ensure that the homework is completed and sign your initials in the designated area if it's required. Occasionally, I will write you a quick note in the folder. Hopefully, by the end of the first quarter, it will be a regular part of your child’s daily routine.

Homework: Homework is used to reinforce skills taught in the classroom. Students may have homework Monday through Thursday. I do not usually give homework on Fridays, however if class work is not completed throughout the week, students may be asked to complete it over the weekend. Some homework assignments may be graded but are generally given and then reviewed by me or gone over together in class.

Grading Policy:  If late homework becomes a habit or if an assignment is needed in order for the student to be able to participate in class, the student may be asked to complete it during free time. We will be taking weekly spelling, reading, and math assessments, these are graded by percentage- this then is translated into a scale score for the report card. I will provide you of a break down of each score on a scoring rubric.

Discipline: The main rule in our classroom is to always show respect. My students and I will develop a set of classroom rules that support showing respect for themselves as well for others. Consequences for not following the rules are as follows: First offense- verbal warning. Second offense- the student will sit out of recess for 5 minutes. Third offense- The student's parents will be notified.

Independent Reading:
I allow time for silent reading on a daily basis. Students can chose a book that they want to read from our classroom library or school library. Students may also choose to bring in a book from home. I encourage all students to keep at least one age appropriate book in their classroom cubbies.

Snacks: I allow time for a quick snack daily. We usually have our snack in the late morning to hold students over until lunch. I encourage my students to bring in a small healthy snack. I also allow them to keep a reusable water bottle with a sports top (to prevent spills) in school. Staying hydrated throughout the day is important. They can refill their water bottles throughout the day as needed.

Classroom Celebrations: If your child would like to celebrate a birthday in school, please notify me in advance so that I can plan an appropriate time in our schedule. We usually have celebrations durning our snacktime. Our school policy is that all birthday treats must be store bought and clearly labeled with the ingredients. The health and safety of our students is taken very seriously and we pay close attention to food allergies. If you send in a birthday treat that requires paper plates, napkins or cups please provide those as well. I plan holiday parties with my students and often ask parents if they could contribute in some way (by sending items in or by volunteering their time to help out).

Contact Information: I can be contacted at school when class isn't in session from 2:20pm to 3:25 pm at (315) 895-7499 or you can email me at mrocco@frankfort-schuyler.org. I also will ask that you get conected to ClassDoJo for the best commuincation throught the day. I will provide you with a code to connect. Please notify the OFFICE of any dismissal changes or absences. Parents can also send a note to me with their child by placing it in their Parent/Teacher Communication folder. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns regarding your child. Let's work together as a team to ensure a great school year for all.

Your teacher,
