Frankfort-Schuyler High School English Language Arts and Public Speaking teacher André Short was recently announced as a 2018 recipient of the Empire State Excellence in Teaching Award.

The Empire State Excellence in Teaching Program was created by Governor Andrew Cuomo in 2016 to support exemplary teachers across New York state who foster creativity, instill a love of learning and motivate students to maintain high expectations and academic goals, inspire thinking and student initiative. These professionals are eager learners who pursue meaningful professional development throughout their careers. This prestigious award recognizes the dedication, expertise and mission of New York teachers, who demonstrate the excellence seen in classrooms across the State.

Short was presented with a commemorative plaque by New York State Commissioner of the Office of General Services RoAnn Destito during a surprise ceremony following an assembly at the Jr./Sr. High School on May 4. As part of the award, Short will also receive a $5,000 stipend to be used for continued learning and professional development.

“The surprise element in this announcement was incredible,” said Short. “It was great to have the whole school in the auditorium to share this award together. I really love coming to school every day and helping my students learn and grow as people. Now, with the award's accompanying stipend, I have an opportunity to continue my growth and become an even better teacher. I am very thankful.”

District and High School administration, staff and students were happy to see Short receive this well-deserved recognition for his hard work and dedication.
