Dear Parents/Guardians:
As you have seen in the media, several school districts have had confirmed cases of Influenza A virus.
Frankfort-Schuyler
Central
School has just learned that we too, have a confirmed case as well.
So what does this mean now that we have a confirmed case? The custodial staff continues to clean high traffic "touch areas" in the academic buildings. In addition, anti-bacterial sanitizers are supplied in many areas in the school district buildings. We will continue our efforts with cleaning and messages to staff, students and the community so we may make the best possible decisions for our students, children and staff.
If, as a parent, you are apprehensive about sending your child to school, please know that we completely understand. However, please also know that it is very likely that you and your child could be exposed to this virus anywhere in the community.
-
Teach your children to wash their hands
often with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand rub. You can set a good example by doing this yourself.
-
Teach your children not to share personal items
like drinks, food or unwashed utensils, and to cover their coughs and sneezes with tissues, covering up their coughs or sneezes using the elbow, arm or sleeve instead of the hand when a tissue is unavailable.
We will continue to use letters and our website,
, for updates. In addition, our nurses and administrators continue to work closely with the Herkimer County Public Health Office and other health professionals to provide up-to-date information and to answer as many of your questions and concerns as we can.
Should you have any questions in the mean time, I encourage you to speak with your family physician, to refer to the Center on Disease Control website, www.cdc.gov,
or to call us here at school. If we do not have the answers you are looking for, we will find them and get back to you as soon as possible.
Sincerely,
Robert F. Reina,

Dear Parents:
As you know, flu can be easily spread from person to person. Therefore, we are taking steps to reduce the spread of flu in the Frankfort-Schuyler Central School District. We want to keep the school open to students and functioning in a normal manner during this flu season.
But, we need your help to do this.
We are working closely with the New York State Education Department and the Herkimer County Health Department to monitor flu conditions and make decisions about the best steps to take concerning schools. We will keep you updated with new information as it becomes available.
We are doing everything we can to keep our school functioning as usual. Here are a few things you can do to help.
-
Teach your children to wash their hands often with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand rub. You can set a good example by doing this yourself.
-
Teach your children not to share personal items like drinks, food or unwashed utensils, and to cover their coughs and sneezes with tissues. Children should also be taught to cover their coughs or sneezes using the elbow, arm or sleeve instead of the hand when a tissue is unavailable.
-
Know the signs and symptoms of the flu. Symptoms of the flu include fever (100 degrees Fahrenheit, 37.8 degrees Celsius or greater), cough, sore throat, a runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, and feeling very tired. Some people may also vomit or have diarrhea.
-
Keep sick children at home for at least 24 hours after they no longer have fever or do not have signs of fever, without using fever-reducing drugs. Keeping children with a fever at home will reduce the number of people who may get infected.
-
Do not send children to school if they are sick. Any children who are determined to be sick while at school will be sent home.
Please help us out by planning now who will pick up your child at school in case of illness. Children cannot be left in the nurse's office when they are sick. Thank you for this pre-planning.
For more information, visit
www.flu.gov
, or call 1-800-CDC-INFO for the most current information about the flu. We will notify you of any additional changes to our school's strategy to prevent the spread of flu. If you should have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your school nurse.
Sincerely,
Robert F. Reina
